Founded 2019
Riverkalpha launched in Hat Yai in 2019 with a clear mandate: economics reporting anchored in the South's own data, not derived from national headlines. Five years on, that mandate has not changed.
About us
Riverkalpha is based in Hat Yai because that is where the stories are — not because Southern Thailand is a convenient dateline.
What Riverkalpha does, in plain language
Riverkalpha is an independent economics news outlet covering the economic life of Southern Thailand, with particular depth in Songkhla province and the Hat Yai–Sadao trade corridor. We produce data-driven explainers, policy analyses, and labor-market reports for an audience that includes regional business owners, public-sector planners, researchers, and engaged residents who want to understand the economic forces affecting their lives without being talked down to or sold a financial product. We were founded in 2019 by a small team of journalists and economists who had worked variously at national Thai media outlets and regional research institutions, and who saw a consistent gap: Southern Thailand's economy was being reported in national averages, not in the district-level granularity that actually helps people make decisions. We set out to correct that. Our team now covers five editorial verticals — macro-economy, business and trade, labor markets, fiscal policy, and household budgets — and we publish between eight and twelve in-depth pieces per month. Every article is reviewed by at least one subject-matter specialist before publication, and we maintain a public corrections policy that we take seriously.
How we work — and what we do not do
Our reporting process starts with primary data: government statistical releases, labor-office records, customs department figures, central bank publications, and on-record interviews. We do not rely on press releases as the sole basis for a story, and we do not publish analysis that cannot be grounded in a citable source. That makes some of our stories slower than a wire-service bulletin — and we accept that trade-off because accuracy has a longer shelf life than speed. There are also clear limits to what Riverkalpha covers. We do not provide investment advice, financial recommendations, or commentary on individual securities, funds, or trading instruments. We do not cover cryptocurrency markets. We do not publish price predictions or forecasts framed as guidance for financial decisions. Our editorial role is to explain and analyze the economic environment — the policy landscape, the labor-market data, the trade flows — not to tell readers what to do with that information. Readers who want investment guidance should consult a licensed financial adviser; what we offer is the informed context that makes that conversation more productive. We are a micro team — four full-time editorial staff and two regular contributing researchers — operating out of Hat Yai, and we are funded through direct reader support and a small number of institutional research partnerships that carry no editorial influence.
Riverkalpha in numbers
Riverkalpha launched in Hat Yai in 2019 with a clear mandate: economics reporting anchored in the South's own data, not derived from national headlines. Five years on, that mandate has not changed.
Our archive holds over 500 articles, explainers, and data analyses — all focused on the economic life of Southern Thailand. Every piece is permanently accessible and cited in line with our transparency policy.
A small, focused team of four journalists and economists, supplemented by two contributing researchers, means every piece gets close editorial attention rather than being processed at volume.
